Once he sees Corrine, he notes her resemblance to his mother despite the age difference and the scars. Now that he’s getting older, and overhears his parents having conversations that contradict the official backstory, he’s starting to wonder about a few things. He’s a little slow on the uptake about his mom and step-dad, but I can understand that as a coping mechanism, so it’s ok. Jory has a girlfriend, also a ballet dancer. He’s a pretty good brother, trying to help the creepy little kid be less insecure and creepy. He’s certainly paying more attention to his younger brother Bart than anyone else in the family does, and tries to protect him. There are bits where he spies on his parents making out and has weird feelings about it, like all children in these books do, but other than that, he’s an all-around good kid.

Has repressed a lot of memories of his earlier childhood, most likely so as to not have to notice that his Momma married her brother. Jory: 14 years old, ballet dancer, good looking, coordinated, excels at school, charming.

One day Corrine climbs a ladder against the common wall and calls to Bart that he and his brother should come visit her, but he does not tell Jory and goes alone, cultivating a deeply weird relationship with his grandmother, and an even weirder one with her butler, John Amos. The owner is a lady who wears a veil and black robes which makes Jory think she is a “Moslem”. Someone (Spoiler, it’s Corrine! With bonus facial scars!) buys the mansion next door and the boys spy on the servants moving fancy furniture in. Paul’s younger brother, and that Cathy and Carrie were adopted by Paul after running away from home following the death of both parents in a car accident. The Setup: Cathy and Chris and Jory and Bart and Emma live in Northern California and don’t have any neighbors though there is a spooky abandoned mansion next door where the boys like to explore. I’m going to have to come up with some new drinking game rules I think.Ĭhapters alternate between Jory and Bart. It’s all just boring and gross and repetitive so far.
